What you can do

If you're reading this in Australia then there's an awful lot of things that you can do to oppose this war. You'll have noticed how governments at local, state and national levels frequently make decisions which arouse a "howl of protest". Only when people complain loudly (and at election time) do governments take notice of the people they were elected to represent.

The protests around the world are bigger than the protests that ended the Vietnam War. Governments in France, Germany, and Russia have listened to their citizens and remembered that they are democracies. In Australia we just have to be a little bit louder to get the attention of the government we elected. You can help.

  • Talk to your friends. Tell them you're sure that you don't want a war. If they disagree remember it's OK to oppose war on principle.
  • Talk to your coworkers. Tell them that you're going to an upcoming protest and ask if they want to come with you. Most unions are actively opposing the war.
  • Get together with some friends and put an ad in the paper saying you want peace.
  • Make an email list of your friends and tell all of them about the peace rally that you are going to.
  • Write to an newspaper editor. Remind them that you would really like the truth and not more diagrams of tanks or bombs. Tell them you won't buy a paper that just prints press releases from the Pentagon.
  • Ring your radio station to make sure they will publicise any upcoming peace rallies.
  • Turn off the TV news and spend the time writing a letter to the PM.
  • Ring your local member, senator and council. Go and visit their offices. Make them understand how much you disapprove. (ideas)
  • Join or start your own local peace group. (links)
  • Organise a peace banner/placard party before the next rally. Cardboard, paint, and a purpose.
  • Sit down and think if you know anybody who could make a big difference if only enough people asked them to help. Ask them to help.
  • Come up with your own ideas and send them to us.
